Dry Ice for Your First Dance: How to Get the “Dancing on the Clouds” Moment Right

Dry Ice for Your First Dance: How to Get the “Dancing on the Clouds” Moment Right

A thick white cloud rolling across the floor while you dance: it’s the first dance photo everyone shares. Dry ice is simple to plan, but timing, venue rules and what’s under your feet all make a difference. Here’s how to get it right.

In a nutshell

  • Dry ice makes a low cloud that stays on the floor, unlike smoke or haze.
  • It lasts for a few minutes, so it’s timed to one big moment.
  • Check with your venue that low-lying effects are allowed.
  • It looks most dramatic on an LED dancefloor with cold sparks around it.

What dry ice actually does

Dry ice creates a dense, white cloud that hugs the floor instead of filling the room. Around your feet it looks like you’re dancing on the clouds, which is why it’s become one of the most requested first dance effects.

It isn’t the same as smoke or haze. Those fill the air and make lighting beams visible. Dry ice stays low, so faces and the room stay clear for your photographer.

When to use it

Most couples save it for the first dance, but it also works for:

  • A grand entrance into the room
  • The cake cutting
  • A big reveal at a party or launch

Talk to your venue early

Every venue has its own rules about effects. Check with your venue that dry ice is allowed in your room, and let us know where you’re celebrating so we can plan the setup. Book our dry ice early for popular wedding dates.

Make it unforgettable

Dry ice looks best on a lit-up LED dancefloor, where the glow shines up through the cloud. Add cold spark fountains either side for a finale everyone films, and light-up letters behind you for the photos. Our DJs can time it all to the first notes of your song.
