About Sopwell House
Sopwell House is a country house hotel and spa on the edge of St Albans. It’s one of the venues we supply regularly, and we’ve set up weddings, birthdays and celebrations there.
Hotels are some of the easiest places to throw a big celebration: guests can stay over, the bar and catering are on hand, and the events team has seen it all before. The flip side is that a hotel function room is usually a neutral space designed to suit everyone, so the entertainment and styling you bring in is what makes it feel like your event rather than the one the night before.

When you look through them, notice where the dancefloor sits in relation to the tables, how the room changes once the lighting goes on, and where a photo spot fits without blocking anyone’s view. It’s the easiest way to picture your own day in the same space.

Planning your setup at Sopwell House
Talk to the events team about your room early
Hotels often have more than one function space, and each has its own layout, ceiling height and access route. Once you know which room you’ve booked, tell us. We’ll suggest where the dancefloor, DJ and photo spot fit best, and agree access and setup times directly with the venue so you don’t have to.
Plan around the hotel’s timings
Hotels run to a timetable: room turnarounds, other events in the building and a finish time for music. We set up before your guests arrive, work quietly around the hotel team, and collect at the agreed time, so your evening flows from the meal into the party without a gap.
Make a neutral room feel like yours
A few well-chosen pieces transform a hotel suite. uplighting warm up plain walls, a light-up letters gives everyone a photo spot, and an LED dancefloor turns the middle of the room into the heart of the party.
Think about guests staying over
With guests staying in the building, many people make a full night of it. A selfie pod keeps them entertained between dances and gives everyone a souvenir to take back to their room.
Want to try it out? Our free room layout planner lets you place the dancefloor, DJ, bar and tables before the day, and share the plan with Sopwell House.
How big should your dancefloor be?
You don’t need room for every guest on the dancefloor. At most weddings and parties, around a third to a half of your guests are dancing at any one time, so it’s best to size it for the busiest moment of the night: the first dance or the last half hour.
Move the slider to your guest numbers to see the size we’d suggest and its price.
Too big and it can look empty and put people off; too small and guests give up and drift back to the bar. Tell us which room you’ve booked at Sopwell House and we’ll check the size fits. Want to go deeper? Try our dancefloor size calculator.
