Smoke, Haze or Low Fog? Which Effect Your Party Actually Needs

Smoke, Haze or Low Fog? Which Effect Your Party Actually Needs

Smoke, haze and low fog all sound similar, but they do very different jobs. Pick the right one and your lighting comes alive; pick the wrong one and you could end up with a room full of mist or a fire alarm going off. Here’s the simple guide.

In a nutshell

  • Haze is a fine mist that makes lighting beams visible.
  • Smoke is thicker and comes in bursts for drama.
  • Low fog stays close to the floor, a bit like dry ice.
  • Always check with your venue about fire alarms first.

Haze: for lighting that pops

A haze machine puts a fine, even mist in the air. You barely notice it, but it makes every lighting beam visible, which turns a dancefloor into a proper party. If you’re booking a DJ with moving lights, haze is what makes them look like the photos.

Smoke: for bursts of drama

Smoke machines are thicker and work in bursts. They’re great for entrances, walk-ons, stage shows and big moments when you want a cloud of atmosphere for a few seconds.

Low fog: a cloud on the floor

A low fogger creates a cloud effect that stays close to the floor, similar to dry ice. It’s popular for first dances and entrances, and for stages where you want the floor to disappear.

Fire alarms and venues

Smoke and haze can set off fire alarms at some venues, so always check with your venue before you book. Some venues can isolate the detectors in your room for the evening. Tell us your venue and we’ll help you choose the right smoke, haze or low fog option, and pair it with our lighting.

Frequently asked questions

Will haze set off the fire alarm?

It can at some venues. Check with your venue before you book; some can isolate the detectors in your room.

Which is best for a dancefloor?

Haze, because it makes the lighting beams visible across the whole room.

They look similar: both stay close to the floor. Tell us your venue and moment and we’ll suggest the best one.
